Author: Henry Fielding Title: Joseph Andrews Introduction by: George Saintsbury Publisher: J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., London Series: Everyman’s Library, No. 467 Date of Publication: 1948 reprint Original edition in this series: 1910 Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket Condition: Very Good book in Good dust jacket Description A pleasing Everyman’s Library edition of Henry Fielding’s Joseph Andrews, published by J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd., London, and issued as No. 467 in the Everyman’s Library series. This copy is a 1948 reprint of the edition first published in this series in 1910, with an introduction by George Saintsbury. First published in 1742, Joseph Andrews is one of the great comic novels of the eighteenth century and a landmark in the development of the English novel. Originally conceived partly in response to Richardson’s Pamela, it quickly developed into a work of much broader comic invention, following the adventures of Joseph Andrews and Parson Adams in a richly humorous exploration of virtue, hypocrisy and human character. This copy retains its attractive original red Everyman’s Library dust jacket, with the familiar cream title panels and decorative central device. The red hardcover is sound and well preserved. Internally, the pages shown in the photographs are clean and bright, with light age toning only. The title and preliminary pages are neat and presentable. The original dust jacket is present and generally attractive, but shows noticeable wear consistent with age, including rubbing, creasing and chipping to the edges and corners, with small losses, particularly around the top edges and rear panel. Despite this, the jacket remains complete enough to present well on the shelf. A sound and attractive reading or collector’s copy of this classic Everyman edition. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.
