About this Item
Jordan Marsh & Co. was Boston s first department store. Eben D. Jordan (1822-1895) began his working life on a farm after moving to Boston in 1836. His goal was to become a merchant, and to that end he left farming and began working in a dry goods store, before going on to work for Boston merchant Daniel Pratt. His diligence and hard work were recognised by another shop owner who gave him his own storefront on Hanover Street in Boston. In 1851 Jordan began a partnership with Benjamin L. Marsh to create Jordan Marsh & Co. which would go on to become the largest retail business in New England. Part of its success arose from the wide range of European products which Jordan traveled to the Continent to procure for his American customers. Jordan died in 1895, and in 1901 his son became president of the now incorporated Jordan Marsh Company. In 1995 Jordan Marsh was acquired by Macy s. This price list is for the fall winter season of 1892, and is in remarkable condition given its age, with some wear to the cloth-covered card covers. The front and back hinges are cracked, but the binding nevertheless appears secure, and all pages appear to be present, though some of the lower edges have become loose or separated. The original order form is present and was never filled out. A variety of products are included and presented with wonderful line drawings. Of particular interest are the prices for the various items, for example a full lady s cashmere suit for $12.50. A fascinating social history artefact, of particular interest perhaps to enthusiasts of fashion history. Seller Inventory # 37
