Jhanas in a Nutshell: Your Practical Guide to Deep Meditative Absorption, Bliss and Inner StillnessDiscover the hidden capacity of your own mind - joy, serenity, and clarity beyond distraction. For over 2,500 years, the Buddhist tradition has described the jhanas - states of deep meditative absorption where the mind rests in luminous stillness and bliss arises naturally. Far from being mystical or unattainable, these profound states are accessible to anyone willing to train their attention and cultivate inner calm.Jhanas in a Nutshell takes you step by step through this transformative path. With clear explanations, practical entry points, and guidance for overcoming common obstacles, this book shows how concentration matures into joy, how joy refines into equanimity, and how stillness becomes the foundation for liberating insight. In this book you will discover: The map of the eight jhanas - from the bliss of the first absorption to the serene vastness of the formless states. How to prepare the ground of practice through ethics, mindfulness, and simplicity of life.Practical methods for entering jhana - breath, body, mantra, kasina, and loving-kindness.The benefits of jhana for resilience, joy, equanimity, and insight - both on the cushion and in daily life.Clear, concise, and practical, this guide distills the essence of jhana practice into a form that is accessible to modern readers - while staying true to the spirit of the tradition. Whether you are a beginner seeking calm or an experienced meditator exploring deeper absorption, this book offers a trustworthy companion on the path.About the AuthorIn a Nutshell Press in collaboration with Michael Aaron Leland Michael Aaron Leland is along-time meditation practitioner with a background in comparative philosophy. His path began with early studies in Western philosophy and psychology, but it was his encounter with Buddhist practice that reshaped his understanding of the mind and human flourishing. After years of practicing mindfulness and studying Buddhist texts, he became fascinated with how ancient teachings on concentration, awareness, and compassion could be presented in clear, accessible ways for modern readers. He has participated in numerous meditation retreats and engaged with teachers from both Zen and Theravada traditions, deepening his appreciation for the universality of contemplative insight. Michael's writing reflects a conviction that profound truths need not be obscure, and that the wisdom of the past can serve as a living guide for navigating the challenges of the present.
