- Book 1 of 2: Jessica's Two Dads
Jessica loves her two dads. And they love her—fiercely, unconditionally, and with all their hearts. But as she grows older, she begins to ask big questions about what makes a family. Most of the other kids at school have a mom and a dad. So why is her family different? And does that mean something is missing?
In Jessica’s Two Dads, author Melvin J. Coates explores these tender questions through a warm and compassionate story that helps children understand love, identity, and family from an inclusive perspective. When Jessica bravely opens up to her dads, they respond with honesty and kindness, explaining that families come in all shapes, sizes—and yes, colors of the rainbow.
Jessica learns about surrogacy, chosen family, and most importantly, that being different isn’t something to fear—it’s something to celebrate. Her dads also introduce her to a vibrant support network at the local Rainbow Center, where Jessica meets other children with two moms or two dads and realizes she’s not alone.
This beautifully illustrated children’s book is designed to help:
- Kids from LGBTQ+ families understand their story and feel proud of it
- Parents introduce diversity, acceptance, and empathy to early readers
- Teachers and counselors open conversations about non-traditional families in school settings
Why families love this book:
- A gentle and age-appropriate explanation of surrogacy and same-sex parenting
- Helps children cope with feeling “different” in school and social settings
- Promotes acceptance, inclusion, and emotional intelligence
- Written with compassion, honesty, and love
Jessica’s Two Dads is a must-have for any parent, teacher, or guardian looking to build empathy and understanding in young readers. Whether your child is part of an LGBTQ+ family or learning to celebrate others, this book is a beautiful reminder that all love is real—and all families are whole.
