Paperback. "He considers the value of his own skin to be higher than that of his opponents."-Igor Bogdanov, speaking about his friend Jean-Pierre Vignau Jean-Pierre Vignau has spent a lifetime discovering what remains of martial arts when there are no rules, no referee and no safe way out.A 9th Dan in Karate, he trained in Karate, Judo, Aikido, Muay Thai and other fighting disciplines, learning from some of the great masters of Japanese Budo. But Vignau's education did not end in the dojo. His extraordinary life took him through prison, nightclub doors, stunt work and mercenary activity, confronting him with violence in circumstances far removed from controlled training. In this remarkable account, Jean-Pierre Leloup draws on Vignau's experiences to explore the relationship between traditional martial arts and real combat. Through stories sometimes brutal, sometimes surprising and often darkly humorous, Vignau discusses physical conditioning, mental preparation, falling, prevention, self-defense and what changes when confrontation becomes real. This is not a rejection of traditional Budo, but a powerful argument for its value. After thousands of confrontations, Vignau's conclusion is strikingly simple: when reality put his training to the test, the traditional martial arts were where he had learned everything that mattered.
