From the Publisher
'Witness to Jazz': A new series of essays featuring the images of reknowned photographer William Gottlieb. These pieces give students a sense of the jazz experience by conveying personal anecdotes about musicians like Dizzy Gillespie, Mary Lou Williams, and Louis Armstrong.
Listening-based approach: Jazz is designed primarily to serve an audience of students outside the music major. For that reason, the text pays specific attention to the appreciation and understanding of jazz as a listener, instead of as a historian or performer.
Student-focused: In keeping with the text's focus on the non-major, key terms and fundamentals are called out and discussed.
Detailed listening guides: To further improve the accessibility of the text, the listening guides include extensive detail so that novice listeners do not become confused or lost within a piece.
Summary, Suggestions for Further Listening, Additional Reading: Further support for the new student of jazz comes in the form of these three chapter closing elements. The Summary reviews the chapter material - names, styles, recordings - to provide a handy reference for study. The Suggestions for Further Listening and for Additional Reading offer a stepping off point from which students can expand their study of an individual, a style, or a period.
Free Audio CD: Each copy of the text comes with a complimentary audio CD featuring recordings that illustrate the variations that create jazz styles.
