In an age when gods walked among mortals and heroes shaped the destiny of kingdoms, one quest would echo through eternity. Jason of Iolcus was born to rule, but his throne was stolen before he could speak his own name. Raised in exile by the wise centaur Chiron, he returns as a man to claim his birthright—only to face an impossible challenge that will either elevate him to legend or destroy him utterly.
The Golden Fleece. Sacred treasure of the gods, guarded by an immortal dragon in the distant kingdom of Colchis. No hero has ever returned alive from seeking it. But Jason will not face this trial alone. Fifty heroes answer his call—warriors whose names are already sung in the halls of kings. Heracles the Mighty, whose strength rivals the gods themselves. Orpheus, whose music can charm even stones to weep. Atalanta the Huntress, swifter than the wind.
The Dioscuri, divine twins born of Zeus. Together, they are the Argonauts, sailing aboard the Argo—a ship blessed by Athena herself and given voice by the sacred wood of Dodona.
Their journey will take them beyond the edge of the known world, through waters where different laws govern reality and ancient powers test the limits of mortal courage. They will face the Clashing Rocks that have crushed every ship before them, battle bronze giants and earth-born warriors, and venture into realms where love can prove more dangerous than any monster. But the greatest trial awaits in Colchis itself, where Jason must complete three impossible tasks to claim his prize. Fire-breathing bulls forged by Hephaestus. Dragon's teeth that spawn armies of invincible soldiers. And finally, the sleepless serpent whose vigilance has never failed in all the centuries since the world was young.
Only Medea, princess of Colchis and granddaughter of the sun god Helios, possesses the power to aid him. But her help comes at a price that will transform both their destinies in ways neither can foresee—a love that will inspire the greatest heroism and the most terrible vengeance the world has ever known.
From the author comes this definitive retelling of the greatest adventure story ever told—a tale of friendship forged in supernatural fire, of love that transcends the boundaries between mortal and divine, and of the prices that heroes pay when they dare to challenge the will of gods and fate.
Some treasures are worth any sacrifice. Others cost more than victory itself.
