Press Photo of James Forman Demanding Reparations at a 1969 New York Press Conference. Black and white silver gelatin UPI telephoto by Dirck Halstead. July 11, 1969. Measures 11" x 8.5". James Forman is pictured here in black sunglasses speaking decisively about the nature of American society and making the case for reparations to Black Americans. Forman declares, "America is the most barbaric country in the world", and demands reparations for injustices to the African American population from white American churches. Forman was a militant black leader who was a vital member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and the Black Panther Party. As Secretary of SNCC, he was a colleague of Martin Luther King Jr., and participated in the Freedom Rides, the Albany movement, the Birmingham campaign, and the Selma to Montgomery marches. His radical consciousness accelerated in the 1960s, and he is pictured here as one of the first major advocates of reparations. His National Black Economic Development Conference, which occurred just a few months before this photo, was an influential touchstone for the movement, with African American clergymen and business people in conjunction with interfaith social justice advocates meeting to develop strategies for Black economic autonomy. At the conference, he delivered the Black Manifesto, which charged the white churches with having a debt to the black community, to be paid in the form of reparations. This was one of the first instances of the concept being heard on a mass scale, and he would continue to advocate for reparations beyond his days as a militant activist, when he eventually took a career in academia. Verso blank. In very good condition overall.
