THE SPANISH 1A WORKBOOK FOR JALEN WALTMAN'S ONLINE COURSE FOR BEGINNERS IN SPANISH!
This beginners’ Spanish workbook is designed to go with my free, complete 32-lesson Spanish 1A course on YouTube. This workbook contains all the vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities for my entire first semester of high school or college Spanish 1. [Note: this workbook is copyrighted and is not for copying as handouts. Check my Teachers Pay Teachers store for handout masters for Sp 1.]
From the first day, you’ll be learning and using new Spanish vocab with fun activities like drawing stick figures with me, listening to my weird, funny stories, and learning to read, write, understand, and speak Spanish. I’m a Nationally Board Certified Spanish Teacher with 19 years’ experience writing my own curriculum and teaching Spanish at the high school, middle school, and adult levels, and I know how to teach YOU to become fluent in this beautiful, fun, marketable language…the second most-spoken language in the world.
These lessons are from the standards-based, textbook-aligned curriculum I created and use for high school Spanish I. We’ll cover all the usual Spanish 1 vocab sets that are taught at the high school and college level:

Asking people how they are and where they are from
Talking about age and birthdays
Numbers, colors, calendar words, weather expressions, and seasons
Telling time
Basic adjectives
Descriptions of people (appearance/personality)
Family and friends
Talking about likes and dislikes
Activities
Classes, teachers, subjects, supplies, places in a school
Cars, houses, and places around town
Shopping
Sports
Movies and books
Basic, common Spanish verbs and verb phrases
Basic foods
Basic animals
We’ll also start learning Spanish grammar along the way:
Negating verbs
Nouns and articles
Tú and Usted
Subject pronouns
Informal commands
Regular present tense verb conjugations
Common verbs like Gustar, Tener, Querer, Hacer, Ir, Venir, Ser and Estar, and Saber and Conocer
The personal “a”
I’ll give you plenty of explanation, memory devices, and other tricks to make the vocab and grammar easier to master. But it’s not about memorizing things and forgetting them a week later--you’ll be acquiring Spanish, building fluency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding from day 1. At the end of this 1A course, if you watch all the videos, participate in the activities, and complete all of the workbook exercises by yourself, you will be able to read a 1300-word story in Spanish off the top of your head with no help, write a narrative essay for 20 minutes in Spanish of at least 100-200 words, tell a basic 10-sentence Spanish story off the top of your head, and understand 80-90% of the language in the new stories I tell you.
The workbook includes a complete vocab and grammar list in the back as well as vocab lessons, daily warm-up quizzes, storyboards so you can understand the stories a scene at a time, question-and-answer practice, page-long Spanish readings reinforcing the vocab/grammar content of each story, graphic organizers to aid in learning to write in Spanish, grammar practice, and four free-write essay prompts.
My YouTube lessons are designed so you can stop wherever you need to and pick back up where you left off when you’re ready. Study on your own time and at your own pace...it’s all right here in the workbook that goes with my free online Spanish lessons on YouTube. If you complete the 32-video course and fill in the entire workbook without cheating, you can use the completed workbook as evidence of first semester Spanish if your institution allows, as well as take placement and/or proficiency exams in level 1 Spanish for credit.
