Print on Demand. This book presents an extensive collection of Jacobite songs and ballads from Scotland, which chronicle the Jacobite movement, a series of uprisings from 1688 to 1746 by supporters, largely from the Scottish Highlands, of the deposed Catholic King James II and his descendants in their attempts to regain the British throne. As well as providing the lyrics, the author offers historical notes on the events and themes which inspired them, such as the Battle of the Boyne, the Act of Union, and the romantic figure of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Collected and edited by folklorist G.S. Macquoid, this book is a rich resource for those with an interest in the history, culture, and literature of Scotland and its tumultuous 17th and 18th centuries. The Jacobite worldview, as seen through these songs and ballads, is one of loyalty to their exiled king, a deep suspicion and resentment of the Protestant Hanoverian monarchy in London, and a passionate attachment to the Highlands and its traditional Gaelic culture. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
