Print on Demand. This book, a collection of poems, displays the author's humorous wit and lyrical style, ranging from melancholy musings to comical tales. Composed in the latter half of the 19th century, the work has remained relevant due to its universal themes of love, loss, and the human condition. Though largely composed of light verse and humorous anecdotes, the author explores deeper philosophical questions with sonnets, narrative poems, and even a lengthy allegorical tale. The work provides a fascinating glimpse into the preoccupations and perspectives of its time, reflecting the social and cultural shifts taking place in the United States during the Victorian era. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

IF any apology is necessary for the gathering together of these articles in verse, it should come from another source than the author. Those who have honored me by reading my first vol ume will discover a marked dil'ference in the character of the two books. And it may be to my prejudice with some of them; but a close observation has taught me that humor is more graciously received by the general reader than mere fine sentiment. If any thing in these pages shall leave an impression that I have ih dulged a less worthy spirit, it must be regarded as growing out of an inability to make myself clearly understood. I have con ceived no satire. I have given no individuality or special dirce tion to any line in the book, and those who know me best will readily acquit me cf any design to be other than amiable and delicate in every allusion.
