About this Item

Decent copy of the true first edition, in a jacket that is moderately chipped but mostly still intact. This is the Harper's edition (not the Literary Guild edition) with green patterned cloth binding and title label of gold foil on spine. First edition is stated on copyright page. A tight and quite clean copy, the only condition problem internally being the sign of a bookplate removal from the half title page (below the printed matter). The jacket's cover illustration is intact and bright, showing a Black man carrying a bale of cotton from a Steamboat. Large chip at upper left of jacket's cover affecting the large letter J in JOHN HENRY. Smaller chip top right corner of jacket affecing the N in the small lettered CHILLUN. Upper edge (head) of jacket's spine affecting by even line of chipping, but just the top edge of the first word on spine JOHN is affected. Jacket also showing the typical darkening from age and signs of rub. Not a great jacket but not a bad one either. The book with decorated endpapers of African-American motifs and vignettes. Woodcut illustrations at head of each chapter. The pages of the first edition printed on good, heavy paper which shows not that much aging. Ads at back for other Roark Bradford titles in the African-American genre. Bookseller Inventory # 1276
