Synopsis
There is no place on Earth where there are more elephants than in Tanzania - and no place where more elephants are being slaughtered. Against a background of crisis and corruption, the author of this book criss-crossed Tanzania's ivory trail by jeep, plane and through the bush on foot. He met embattled conservationists and a game officer with a Walter PPK and hitched rides with bush pilots. He brushed with the army and, piecing together the clues, tracked down the liars of the traffickers and corrupt officials. Most significantly he hunted down the "jangili", the ivory poachers, the men who do the killing. Poor and illiterate, far out in the bush and living by their wits from camp to camp, the "jangili" are the shadow masters of ivory knights.
