From the blurb: "There is no other book on this subject from which one can learn so much in so short a time and with so much delight, none that makes the approach to art so easy or opens the reader's eyes wider to the understand-ing of art as a whole. He will soon understand why Berenson has been caìled 'the greatest art critic since Ruskin' and why this book is, 'in style and authority, a classic'. 'Italian painting,' claims Mr. Berenson, 'interests us more than the painting of any other school not because of its essential superìority, but because it expresses the Renaissance.' Berenson's book certainly infects the reader with the author's own interest in bis subject. He discusses the great painters from Cimabue to Tiepolo in the most lucid and most comprehensive way and has the gift of finding formulas of epigrammatic and unforgettable sharpness. In this book the reader will not meet with a single dull sentence nor with one that is not based on life-long experience and sincere enthusiasm. Thè present edition is specially valuable for the 400 iliustrations which accompany the text. Even the student who has seen the original paintìngs will appreciate this visual help, but for a beginner who approaches the fìeld for the first time these illustrations are an indispensable complement to the text. As all pictures discussed at some length are reproduced, the reading of this book becomes a complete pleasure." Area around head of spine and top left corner of front board slightly discoloured from old dampstaining which has slightly marked small areas around the top of the gutter on the front endpapers, half-title and title-page, contents slightly agetoned, otherwise Good in a rather browned dustwrapper.
