Cloth, 4to, 31 cm, 214 pp, profusely illustrated, many mounted plates in colour. From the blurb: "Professor Salmi's Italian Miniatures represents a fresh approach to the subject, reflecting the fullness of vision, the extensive knowledge and research of a lifetime of application; many new and original interpretations and more precise attributions of specific works are offered. Here, we cover the whole field, from Oderisi da Gubbio and Franco Bolognese to Simone Martini; from Giovannino de' Grassi, Belbello da Pavia, Cristoforo and Ambrogio de Prédis to Andrea Solario and Giulio Clovio. Thus, for the first time, a sector of art history is brought into focus which had been unjustly neglected for so long, but which contains some of the most glorious achievements of Italian Art, as will be seen from the beautiful reproductions brought together in this book." First published in 1954, in a private edition by the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro. For the present edition the text has been recast in part and enlarged, and the bibliography expanded. Moreover, a considerable number of illustrations have been added. Contents include: The Early Middle Ages and the Romanesque Style.; The Gothic Era; I. Bologna, Emilia, and Romagna; II. Florence; III. Siena, Pisa, and Umbria; IV. Rome, Naples, and the South; V. Venice; VI. Lombardy and Piedmont.; The Renaissance; I. Florence, Siena, and Perugia; II. Ferrara, Emilia, and Romagna; III. Venice; IV. Rome, Naples, and the South; V. Lombardy and Piedmont; Conclusion; Bibliography; Index. The English edition is a translation of: La miniatura italiana. Some light foxing, otherwise Very Good in slightly used dustwrapper which is torn with loss at the head of the spine. In plain thin card slipcase.…
