Your first visit should be about standing beneath centuries-old architecture, crossing the Bosphorus, wandering through colorful markets, discovering unforgettable food, and experiencing a city where Europe and Asia meet—not spending every evening trying to figure out tomorrow's plan.
But Istanbul can also be confusing for first-time travelers.
Which historic district makes the best base? How do you use public transportation? Which experiences need advance planning? Where can you eat authentic local food? And how do you recognize the tourist traps before they cost you time and money?
This practical guide gives you the answers in one place.
Inside, you'll discover:
- Carefully structured 3-day and 5-day itineraries to help you make limited time count
- The best historic areas and neighborhoods to consider when choosing where to stay
- Practical guidance for exploring the Grand Bazaar, historic landmarks, and Bosphorus
- Straightforward advice on trams, ferries, public transport, airport transfers, and getting around
- A practical introduction to Turkish food, local dining, markets, and hammam experiences
- Tips for understanding local customs and navigating busy tourist areas with greater confidence
- Guidance on identifying common tourist traps and avoidable travel mistakes
- Useful planning advice covering money, packing, connectivity, safety, and everyday logistics
You shouldn't need to become an Istanbul expert before you can enjoy Istanbul.
No unnecessary information overload. Just practical details organized around the questions you're most likely to have before and during your trip.
And there's more waiting beyond the postcard version of the city. Explore historic neighborhoods at your own pace, discover the rhythm of local markets, taste your way through Istanbul, and experience the Bosphorus while understanding how to move confidently between the places that matter most.
Your time in Istanbul may be limited. A poorly planned day can disappear quickly.
A little preparation can make every remaining day count.
If Istanbul is on your 2027 itinerary, this guide gives you a clear, practical starting point for experiencing the city with greater confidence.

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
