Item description from seller

Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 20 1/4" x 19". This map of the island of San Domingo or Hispaniola, which is now home to the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, displays mountains, ports, and rivers. A large inset in the top left corner shows the island of Martinique, with mountains shown in profile and detailed inclusion of towns. An elegantly engraved and beautifully colored title cartouche features tropical flora as well as fish. The map is in very good condition. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766) was an important French mapmaker during the 18th century. His "Atlas Universel" was one of the most significant atlases of the period, integrating older sources with more modern surveyed maps in order to convey correct geographical and political information.
