The distinctive insider's guide to the Isle of Man — a Slow Travel guide to this self-governing Crown Dependency in the Irish Sea.
A parliament older than most nations. A language with fairies woven into daily life. A place so distinct it's often called "the British Isles in miniature" - and yet it's just a short hop from mainland Britain. There's nowhere quite like the Isle of Man. This new guidebook, part of Bradt's award-winning Slow Travel series, is ideal for visitors who want to experience it properly.
Written with intimate detail by Emma Craig, who was born and raised on the island, it offers a more personal, off-beat selection of places than other guides. Manx people take great pride in their cultural and political identity: Tynwald, their thousand-plus-year-old parliament, claims to be the world's oldest continuous parliamentary assembly, and the island holds its place among the six Celtic nations. Folklore remains genuinely entwined with everyday life here - children celebrate Hop tu Naa instead of Halloween, bonfires are lit for Oie Voaldyn, and it's said wise to greet the fairies at Fairy Bridge.
What you'll find inside:
- Covers the whole island in depth - from Douglas, Ramsey, Peel and Castletown to winding country lanes and coconut-scented gorse footpaths
- Walks and journeys for all interests – main roads, steam trains and the world's oldest tram, taking in flat plains, rugged hills, sandy beaches and craggy smugglers' coves
- The Isle of Man's culture and wildlife explored fully – basking sharks, four-horned loaghtan sheep, the Isle of Man TT motorbike race, and Neolithic standing stones
- Honest, practical travel information for every type of trip – insight told through local voices and everyday island life
- Fascinating background that brings the island to life – Cregneash's folk village, ghost tours, the Great Laxey Wheel, and Celtic and Viking roots

About the Author
Emma Craig is a journalist who lives in the Isle of Man. With a long Manx heritage on both sides of her family, she was born and raised on the Isle of Man, spending her childhood hearing stories of her ancestors’ exploits at sea and down the local mines. Moving to Paris to attend university, she was surprised to learn that not everyone grows up in a land dominated by fairies and shape-shifting ogres — and quickly realised that she came from somewhere quite special. Her lifelong love of words took her into a career in journalism and she has spent a decade working on national newspapers, while also finding time to write a little poetry on the side. She enjoys nothing more than telling willing listeners about her home — and the contents of Bradt’s Isle of Man (Slow Travel), her first book, are exactly what she would tell any visiting friend.
