Print on Demand. This book records the 10-year results of experiments where prune trees and fruit were subjected to varying irrigation treatments to measure differences between moisture levels and plant responses. The author, an expert in irrigation investigations, studied these responses against the backdrop of the interior California valley climate to determine whether varying soil moisture levels affected plant growth and fruit production. By comparing soil moisture extraction curves, tree growth measurements, and annual fruit yields, this book suggests an optimal range of irrigation for prune trees, examining how it impacts fruit size and quality. The author's insights into plant-water relationships and their impact on fruit production offer valuable guidance for orchardists seeking to optimize their irrigation practices. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

During the first six years, all trees were treated as nearly uniformly as possible. Pruning, during the first few years, was essentially a train ing process, designed to provide a strong system of framework branches. Thereafter it consisted of a light annual thinning, to prevent crowding of branches in later years. Throughout, the pruning has been relatively light, with no innovations that might change the bearing or growth habits. After the preliminary training period, the trees assumed their natural shape. Figures 1 and 2 show a typical tree at successive stages of growth.
