Condition remarks:Book: Good Jacket: Worn/faded, no tearsPages: Good Markings: No markingsA sweeping saga of transition and tradition, The Irishman captures the rugged spirit of the Australian North through the eyes of a young boy coming of age. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, the narrative follows Michael Doolan as he navigates the complex legacy of his father, Paddy-a teamster whose devotion to his horse-drawn wagons pits him against the inexorable tide of the motor age. As Michael moves between the harsh reality of the outback and the shifting social structures of a developing nation, he must reconcile his family's fierce independence with the changing world around him. Elizabeth O'Conner crafts a poignant exploration of masculinity, progress, and the profound connection between a people and their landscape. Her prose is marked by a lyrical realism that vividly renders the dust and heat of the Queensland interior, elevating a regional tale into a universal meditation on the passing of eras. Winner of the Miles Franklin Award, this work remains a seminal piece of Australian literature, celebrated for its evocative atmosphere and its empathetic portrayal of those caught in the crossroads of history.
