At a time of great turmoil at home in Ireland, thirty-two Irish Jesuits signed up to minister to Catholic soldiers on the battlefields of the First World War. Damien Burke, assistant archivist to the Irish Jesuit Province, has edited a fascinating collection of essays on eleven Irish Jesuit Chaplains, especially written for this volume. Six of the Jesuits in the book survived the war, such as Fr Frank Browne, the most decorated Catholic chaplain to survive the war. Amongst the five who did not come home, Fr Willie Doyle, whose story is told here by Bernard McGuckian SJ. The Jesuit chaplains in the book are: Francis M. Browne, S.J., M.C. (1880-1960); John Delaney, S.J. , M.C. (1883-1956); William Doyle, S.J., M.C. (1873-1917); John Fitzgibbon, S.J., M.C. (1882-1918) ; Henry Gill, S.J., M.C., D.S.O. (1872-1945) ; John Gwynn, S.J. (1866-1915) ; Austin Hartigan, S.J. (1882-1916); Patrick Morris, S.J. (1882-1966) ; Patrick O Mara, S.J. (1875-1969); Daniel Roche, S.J., M.C. (1882-1961); Michael Bergin, S.J., M.C. (1879-1917)
