During the last century and a halt. Ireland has experienced an exodus of its people disproportionate to its size. In 1841 the population of Ireland-north and south - was over 8 million. One hundred years later this figure had almost halved, the most substantial losses occurring in the twenty-six counties ot the present Republic. Vast numbers of men, women and children emigrated to America during and immediately after the Great Famine, but emigration was to remain a central issue in Irish society during the decades prior to, and for four decades after, the achievement of Independence in 1922. The reasons for the exodus were primarily economic.
