The world’s most iconic buildings were only made possible thanks to the art of engineering. This book explores the close collaboration between architects and engineers, and the interplay between form and function. It is a tribute to the invisible work behind the visible miracles – and to the engineers whose efforts turn visions into reality.
The book highlights spectacular moments in the history of architecture, where visionary architects and groundbreaking engineers pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible. From antiquity to the present day – from the Pantheon and the Cathedral in Florence to the Forth Bridge, the Sydney Opera House, the Pompidou Centre, and the Grande Arche. Architecture critic Holger Dahl tells the story of 12 selected buildings, shedding new light on the structural strokes of genius and the collaborations that brought them to life.
