INVISIBLE GUARDIANS
Building Safety, Codes, and the Responsibility to Protect
By Jerry Carnes BCO
Every day, millions of people walk into buildings without thinking about whether they are safe.
Homes, schools, offices, restaurants, and hospitals all rely on an unseen system designed to protect the people inside them. That system is built on codes, inspections, and the professionals who enforce them.
But these protections didn't come easily.
They were shaped by tragedies-fires, collapses, and failures that exposed dangerous weaknesses in construction and safety practices. Each disaster led to new rules, stronger standards, and better oversight.
Invisible Guardians takes readers behind the scenes of the built environment and reveals:
- How building codes are developed and why they matter
- The step-by-step process from permits to final inspections
- The critical role of inspectors, engineers, and code officials
- Real-world disasters that changed safety regulations forever
- How proper enforcement prevents tragedies before they happen
Written for homeowners, contractors, inspectors, and anyone interested in how buildings are made safe, this book explains the systems most people never see-but rely on every day.
Because when building safety works, no one notices.
And that's exactly the point.
