Paperback. A practical electronics textbook for inventors and serious beginners who want to move from theory to real circuits, prototypes, testing, PCB design, and product-ready thinking. Electronics becomes useful when theory turns into a working circuit. The Inventor's Handbook of Applied Electronics is a practical, calculation-based guide for readers who want to understand components, design circuits, build prototypes, test ideas, debug failures, and move confidently from concept to working device.Written for inventors, makers, engineering students, technicians, and serious self-taught learners, this handbook connects the math of electronics with the design decisions engineers face at the bench.Starting with voltage, current, resistance, power, and circuit analysis, Robert Samuel Chen builds a clear path through passive components, AC behavior, semiconductors, amplifier design, operational amplifiers, power supplies, digital logic, microcontrollers, sensors, PCB layout, prototyping, testing, debugging, and real-world product design constraints.Instead of treating electronics as disconnected formulas, this book shows how each idea fits into practical design work: choosing resistors and capacitors, sizing power supplies, understanding transistor behavior, using op-amps correctly, reading signals, conditioning sensor outputs, routing PCB traces, managing component ratings, and finding faults through systematic debugging.Inside, readers will find: Worked, fully calculated examples with units shown clearlyPractical explanations of resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, BJTs, MOSFETs, op-amps, regulators, logic gates, microcontrollers, sensors, and PCBsStep-by-step coverage of circuit analysis, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, AC reactance, filters, amplifiers, and power conversionGuidance on breadboarding, soldering, fabrication, measurement tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and fault-findingReal-world design topics including BOM management, component sourcing, DFM, DFA, reliability, compliance planning, cost rollup, and product lifecycle issuesAppendices covering symbols, standard resistor values, wire gauges, formulas, schematic symbols, physical constants, referenced standards, and troubleshootingA capstone battery-powered environmental monitor project that ties the complete design process togetherThis is not a collection of random projects. A practical electronics textbook for inventors and serious beginners who want to move from theory to real circuits, prototypes, testing, PCB design, and product-ready thinking.
Electronics becomes useful when theory turns into a working circuit.
The Inventor’s Handbook of Applied Electronics is a practical, calculation-based guide for readers who want to understand components, design circuits, build prototypes, test ideas, debug failures, and move confidently from concept to working device.
Written for inventors, makers, engineering students, technicians, and serious self-taught learners, this handbook connects the math of electronics with the design decisions engineers face at the bench.
Starting with voltage, current, resistance, power, and circuit analysis, Robert Samuel Chen builds a clear path through passive components, AC behavior, semiconductors, amplifier design, operational amplifiers, power supplies, digital logic, microcontrollers, sensors, PCB layout, prototyping, testing, debugging, and real-world product design constraints.
Instead of treating electronics as disconnected formulas, this book shows how each idea fits into practical design work: choosing resistors and capacitors, sizing power supplies, understanding transistor behavior, using op-amps correctly, reading signals, conditioning sensor outputs, routing PCB traces, managing component ratings, and finding faults through systematic debugging.
Inside, readers will find:
- Worked, fully calculated examples with units shown clearly
- Practical explanations of resistors, capacitors, inductors, diodes, BJTs, MOSFETs, op-amps, regulators, logic gates, microcontrollers, sensors, and PCBs
- Step-by-step coverage of circuit analysis, Thevenin and Norton equivalents, AC reactance, filters, amplifiers, and power conversion
- Guidance on breadboarding, soldering, fabrication, measurement tools, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and fault-finding
- Real-world design topics including BOM management, component sourcing, DFM, DFA, reliability, compliance planning, cost rollup, and product lifecycle issues
- Appendices covering symbols, standard resistor values, wire gauges, formulas, schematic symbols, physical constants, referenced standards, and troubleshooting
- A capstone battery-powered environmental monitor project that ties the complete design process together
This is not a collection of random projects. It is a structured path through the core knowledge needed to build, test, and improve electronic devices.
For readers ready to move beyond surface-level tutorials and start thinking like practical designers, The Inventor’s Handbook of Applied Electronics provides a clear, rigorous, and hands-on foundation for real-world electronic invention.
