From the Publisher
A view of media as central to how we know ourselves and our world. The text asks students to imagine themselves in difficult situations and to look beyond the obvious solutions. The boxes (detailed below) and chapter-ending exercises challenge students and help them understand the complexities of the telecommunications industries.
A cultural emphasis that encourages students to examine the media as integral in constructing our perceptions about culture. This focus allows students to understand the relationship between the telecommunications industries and audiences. Topics such as regulation, self-regulation, ethics, and effects are dealt with in specific individual chapters and discussed throughout the text.
An extensive box program that focuses on both the practitioner and the consumer:
"Careers in Telecommunications" provide insight for students who want to know more about the specific telecommunications industries. (Practitioner Orientation)
"Tech Talk" offers detailed explanations and graphic representations of the technical aspects of the telecommunications industries. (Practitioner Orientation)
"Critical Issues" focus on telecommunications and power'who has it and how they use it. (Consumer Orientation)
"The Real World" presents a variety of economic, regulatory, ethical, and content issues. These boxes put students in the shoes of either industry pros or media consumers and asks them to determine appropriate responses from their perspectives. (Practitioner and Consumer Orientation)
Several types of study aids in each chapter, including end of chapter reviews, questions for review, and questions for critical thinking and discussion.
