A concise and updated classic for college instructors, this third edition provides a clear and practical introduction to the principles, purposes, and best practices of rubrics.
When used thoughtfully, rubrics save grading time, spark meaningful discussion, and foster independent learning. This book explains how to design effective rubrics, align criteria with learning outcomes, and apply them across assignments―from term papers and portfolios to lab work, presentations, and critical-thinking tasks. A fully revamped chapter addresses the unique challenges of online teaching, offering strategies for leveraging and evaluating AI-generated and ready-made rubrics. Each chapter begins with learning goals and concludes with concise summaries, along with review, discussion, and reflection questions to support quick adoption and course redesign. An annotated bibliography highlights the research on rubrics across multiple disciplines and includes sample rubrics that are available for free download at www.routledge.com/9781041069386, and additional online resources help readers adapt rubric practices for program assessment, doctoral dissertation development, and career advancement.
