This little book is a friendly introduction to the magnificent Mabinogi, the very first prose stories.
Once upon a time all stories were told in poems. These tales are the ancestors of
ALL novels, stories, theatre, film, gaming, in prose today.
Adventures, romances, power struggles, war
Wry comedy, doomed tragedy, crafted enchantments Here's the original tales, shortened, original wording.
Small changes open up meaning for modern readers.
The world of the Mabinogi of Wales
Proud horse-riding princes, high status women, Laws, customs, gods and goddesses, Magicians.
GUIDE to the best English translations from
the original mediaeval Welsh. Key ideas from scholars.
With all the above still a small, easy book
with lots of lovely pictures.
The Mabinogi is a work of genius
Its intricacy fascinates scholars for a lifetime yet children younger than six delight in its adventures.
One of the great works of European heritage,
like Shakespeare and Homer. Most of all - fun.
Suitable for high school, secondary school readers, basic college study, or anyone interested in literature, history and mythology. Young children will enjoy the retold stories.
Serious students will like the first steps into theories.
I grew up in the country, in Essex, a sturdy little girl with glasses and plaits. I loved climbing trees and fairy tales.
My teens were unhappy including time in Greenwich Village (NY) 1960s, when young girls like me were abused.
In my 20s I became an active feminist, one of the first Radical Feminists of Britain.
I discovered the Mabinogi in Ford"s translation. Loved it.
I created 'Tabbies', a women's retreat with cafe, sauna and meeting rooms. This developed into a national network for self-help, 'House of the Goddess' also publishing. Both projects centred on personal freedom and spirituality.
I became modestly famous, then retired, exhausted, 2005.
Many years later at almost 40 I came to Wales to visit my best friend John. He showed me his land of struggle and beauty.
I fell in love with both of them. He was delighted I already knew his ancestral tales.
John has been at my side for decades as I went deeper and deeper into Mabinogi intricacies. So it"s all his fault.
Most recently he helped me do a PhD on Rhiannon.
My other faithful friend and helper is sleek, black, and elegant. Her singing purr encourages me constantly.
