Intended for european and american readers it tells the political and social history of the country from the era before the introduction of Buddhism and Chinese culture, through the various shogunates of the medieval period, to the Tokagawa shogunate and then the Meiji restoration and their policies of modernization. Quarter cloth with patterned paper boards. 8vo. [xvi] 411pp. Top edge gilt. Fore edge rough cut. Bumping to corners. Light rubbing to extremities. Some offsetting and marking to end-papers.
