- Medieval UK and Ireland History
Discover how bishops, cathedrals, and medieval power shaped England—and what their story reveals about society.
This non-fiction work delves into the clergy and the great churches of the Middle Ages. It explains how bishops and archbishops held vast land, income, and influence, and how their authority connected to kings and councils. It also describes cathedrals as more than churches: they were centers of art, learning, and community pride, built over generations with the help of townspeople and skilled craftsmen.
You’ll learn about cathedral architecture, from the sturdy Norman style to the soaring Gothic, and how features like stained glass, arches, and gargoyles created spaces that inspired awe. The text also contrasts the grandeur of cathedrals with the more modest parish churches, showing how church life touched everyday village life, charity, and family milestones.- How the church organized its hierarchy from pope to parish priest
- The roles and duties of bishops, archbishops, and clergy
- The design, construction, and significance of cathedrals
- How faith, politics, and daily life intersected in medieval England
