From the Author
Very few people understand the impact that Windows 2000 will have both on the Internet and within corporations. It contains dozens of new technologies that will change the way you do business. This book is the best way to learn about the new features of Windows 2000 server, how they will change networking, and how they will affect you.
If you are already familiar with Windows NT 4.0, you'll be very surprised how many aspects of the operating system have changed. The Active Directory will completely change the way NT domains have worked--but do you know how to prepare your current network? Were you aware that trusts can now be transitive? Did you know that Windows 2000 Server includes many features that currently require purchasing separate firewall or proxy server software?
This book will introduce each of these new technologies to you, so that you can understand which features will have the greatest impact on your systems. This book is based on the beta version of Windows 2000 Server, but I worked closely with Microsoft developers to ensure the information will remain accurate when the final product is released. Further, Windows 2000 is already feature complete, so there won't be any suprises.
It's an easy read, allowing you to quickly digest what Windows 2000 has to offer. If you decide you want more information on a particular topic, the book refers to external whitepapers and documentation. It's simply impossible to grasp all of the new technologies without this book--which is why I think it's an excellent read for everyone, regardless of their experience level.
Reading this book is the fastest way to become Windows 2000 literate and to begin preparing yourself for the next generation of Microsoft's server operating system.
