From the Publisher
Firm Valuation: Section Two, Chapters 4-6, emphasizes firm valuation, which is the focus of financial analysis in terms of valuing a company or its shares. This gives the text a capital market focus, of which there is a growing body of research investigating the capital market differences that exist between countries. This firm valuation emphasis provides a natural way for instructors to link current research with the text and classroom discussion.
New focus countries: Due to economic changes, Brazil is no longer the best example of inflationary accounting. Therefore, Mexico is the inflationary example in the second edition.
U.S. GAAP Appendix: This will be particularly valuable for overseas adopters who want to compare IASC GAAP, U.S. GAAP, and the GAAP of any of the seven countries profiled in the book.
Financial reporting approach: Instead of focusing on individual FASB's that constantly change, this approach allows students to see the 'big picture.' It is also a more analytical approach, which appeals to the MBA market. It emphasizes a financial analysis focus of international accounting in a cultural context using the Hofstede paradigm. No other text tries to understand the reporting differences between countries by looking at the cultural/environmental setting.
Country focus chapters: In the first 6 chapters, the authors develop the financial analysis framework. Then, the framework is applied to seven representative countries: Germany, South Korea, Japan, Great Britain, Sweden, Italy, and Mexico. Each country is the one most representative of a particular accounting system. For example, Sweden is the best representation of a socialistic accounting system.
Pedagogy: Haskins contains popular press articles and real company financial statements to make the book more relevant and engaging to students.
Abundant end-of-chapter material: Provides the student with plenty of exercises and problems to reinforce new concepts.
