About the Author
Adriana Peña Pérez Negrón holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the Technical University of Madrid (2009) and currently serves as a Research Professor in the Department of Electronics and Computing at the University of Guadalajara’s Center for Exact Sciences and Engineering (CUCEI-UDG) in Mexico. At CUCEI-UDG, she teaches courses such as Experimental and Statistical Design and leads interdisciplinary research at the crossroads of virtual environments, artificial intelligence (AI), and education. A founding member of the College of Information Systems Professionals of Jalisco (COPSIJAL), she also contributes to the academic community as the Editor-in-Chief of ReCIBE, a peer-reviewed journal focused on computing, biomedicine, and electronics. Dr. Peña Pérez Negrón is a pioneering scholar in collaborative virtual environments, virtual reality (VR), and AI-driven educational tools. Her research bridges theoretical innovation and practical applications, with notable contributions including the development of frameworks for analyzing nonverbal communication in avatars―advancements that enhance human collaboration in digital spaces. Her work, published in leading journals such as Virtual Reality and Journal on Multimodal User Interfaces, has redefined how virtual interactions are designed and understood. A strong advocate for technology’s role in education, she has spearheaded projects integrating VR and open-source software to create educational video games, including methodologies for training professionals in Industry 4.0 competencies. Her interdisciplinary approach extends to gamifying international software engineering standards (e.g., ISO/IEC 29110) for academic settings in Mexico, fostering best practices in software development teams. Beyond education, she has contributed to smart city frameworks using big data algorithms and sentiment analysis in Spanish, offering scalable solutions for urban decision-making. Committed to diversity in STEM, Dr. Peña Pérez Negrón co-edited Latin American Women and Research Contributions to the IT Field (2020), a groundbreaking anthology highlighting women’s leadership in technology across Latin America. Her editorial leadership also includes Virtual Reality Designs (2020), a seminal text exploring VR applications in behavioral analysis and education. With over 50 publications in indexed journals and international conferences, she has collaborated on projects ranging from synthetic perception in autonomous characters to nanoparticle applications in agriculture, underscoring her dedication to solving societal challenges through technology. Recognized for her visionary scholarship, she continues to explore the synergies between VR, gamification, and collaborative learning, aiming to cultivate high-performing teams in software engineering. Her work not only advances academic discourse but also empowers industries and communities, cementing her legacy as a researcher who transcends disciplinary boundaries to drive innovation in education, equity, and technology.
Marco Antonio Pérez-Cisneros holds a Ph.D. in Science from the University of Manchester’s Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), United Kingdom, awarded in 2004. He currently serves as a Professor and Dean of the Electronics and Computer Science Division at the University of Guadalajara’s Center for Exact Sciences and Engineering (CUCEI-UDG), Mexico. A distinguished member of Mexico’s National Research System (SNI) and the Mexican Academy of Sciences, he is also affiliated with prominent international organizations such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Dr. Pérez-Cisneros is a leading scholar in computational intelligence and evolutionary algorithms, with a prolific career spanning robotics, computer vision, automated control, and medical technology. His research has yielded over 130 indexed publications and seven authoritative textbooks, establishing him as a pivotal figure in applied computational methodologies. Among his groundbreaking contributions are the development of the Whale Optimization Algorithm and the Water Strider Algorithm, innovative metaheuristic frameworks designed to tackle complex multi-objective engineering challenges. His work in medical image analysis, particularly his metaheuristic approaches to COVID-19 detection and machine learning models for diagnosing conditions like flatfoot disease, underscores his commitment to merging technology with healthcare solutions. A pioneer in image processing, Dr. Pérez-Cisneros has advanced techniques for contrast enhancement, multi-level segmentation, and thermal analysis using nature-inspired algorithms. His interdisciplinary collaborations extend to smart city initiatives, where he applies agent-based modeling and big data analytics to optimize urban safety and energy efficiency. Beyond research, he is a dedicated educator and advocate for technological literacy. As co-editor of Virtual Reality Designs (2020), he explores virtual reality’s potential in behavioral studies and education, while his textbooks on computational intelligence serve as foundational resources for students and professionals alike. Currently, Dr. Pérez-Cisneros focuses on AI-driven systems for emergency evacuation planning and gamified educational tools, reflecting his vision of technology as a force for societal advancement. Recognized for his rigorous scholarship and leadership, he continues to mentor emerging engineers and shape the future of computational intelligence, leaving an indelible mark on both academia and industry.
