Interdisciplinary Approaches to Data Governance, AI, and Digital Society

In a data-driven world, the governance of digital technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) is a concern for governments, businesses, and societies. Addressing the complex social, ethical, legal, and technical challenges posed by AI and digital systems requires an interdisciplinary approach that draws from fields like computer science, law, sociology, public policy, ethics, economics, and communication studies. Interdisciplinary perspectives enable a more comprehensive understanding of how data governance frameworks shape privacy, accountability, algorithmic bias, digital inclusion, and democratic participation. Integrating diverse forms of expertise may develop more equitable and transparent systems that balance technological innovation with societal values and human rights in a digital society. This book covers topics such as digital sovereignty, regulatory compliance, and technostress, and is a useful resource for business owners, government officials, engineers, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and data scientists.

Muhammad Anshari is an Associate Professor of Business Information Systems at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam School of Business and Economics (UBDSBE) and currently serves as the Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, UBD. After completing his PhD at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, he served as a Research Fellow at National Taiwan University, following an earlier research fellowship at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia. He has completed ten research grant projects and three industry consultancy projects. Since 2022, Dr. Anshari has been listed among Stanford University's Top 2% of Scientists Worldwide in the fields of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Business and Management. He received two Outstanding Paper Awards at the Emerald Literati Awards 2023, and his work has been cited in three U.S. patents. In 2024, he was awarded the Research Excellence Award for Senior Academic Career (Social Sciences) at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. His research primarily contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), with interests spanning Business Information Systems, Knowledge Management Systems, Digital Business, Digital Humanities, Digital Governance, and Digital Health.

Dr. Mohammad Nabil Almunawar is currently an associate professor at the School of Business and Economics, Universiti of Brunei Darussalam (UBDSBE), Brunei Darussalam. Hwe wasthe former dean of UBDSBE. He received his bachelor’s degree in 1983 from Bogor Agricultural University, Indonesia, master’s degree (MSc) from the Department of Computer Science, University of Western Ontario, London, Canada in 1991, and Ph.D in Computer Science/Information Systems from the University of New South Wales in 1998. Dr. Almunawar has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals, books, book chapters, encyclopedias, and international conference proceedings. He has more than 30 years of teaching experience in the area of information systems. His overall research interests include applications of IT in management, e-business/commerce, digital marketplace/platform, digital business ecosystem, health informatics, information security, and cloud computing. Currently, he focuses his research on digital transformation, digital marketplace, digital platform, and digital business ecosystem.

Hazri Kifle is the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and is recognized for his leadership in higher education, public sector innovation, and digital transformation. His vision aligns UBD with Brunei’s Vision 2035, emphasizing sustainability, global partnerships, and preparing graduates for future industries. He has contributed significantly to e-Government development, focusing on ICT’s role in governance and service delivery, and has published research on teacher professionalism, youth leadership, and innovation in education. Beyond academia, he actively promotes regional cooperation and has delivered keynote addresses on AI literacy, maritime governance, and strategic trust. His expertise spans public sector innovation, digital transformation, higher education leadership, and youth development, making him a pivotal figure in shaping Brunei’s academic and policy landscape while positioning UBD as a hub for sustainability and innovation.
