Print on Demand. This book interrogates Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding which is widely considered the most important work on metaphysical science in the English language. The author provides meticulous textual analysis to argue that Locke is neither a Sensualist, Empiricist, nor an Intellectualist in the sense of Reid and Kant, as the standard criticism has it. Instead, Locke is shown to be an Intellectualist who anticipated the Kantian distinction of Knowledge into A posteriori and A priori, Synthetic and Analytic, and who agreed with Kant on all fundamental questions of Psychology, though diverging on the Science of Metaphysics. The book provides a comprehensive overview of Locke's philosophy, placing it within the broader context of the history of philosophical ideas. It's an indispensable resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in Locke's enduring legacy. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- General Philosophy
HE object of this Book is indicated by its Title. It professes to establish by a rigorous analysis of the Essay concerning Human Understanding, that Locke is neither a Sensualist, ignoring the existence of any Elements of Thought but those supplied by the External Senses, nor an Empiricist, recognising the existence of no Elements of Thought but those supplied by Sense, External or Internal. It professes to establish that Locke, on the contrary, as recognis ing Ideas of Which Intellect is properly the source, and Cognitions of Which Intellect is exclusively the guarantee, is an Intellectualist - an Intellectualist in the sense of Reid and Kant.
