Axel Vervoordt is probably the most renowned antique dealer and interior designer in Europe. The Belgian "master of staging" is famous worldwide for its timelessly elegant style. He not only advises the English and Belgian royalty, his customers once included Nurejew and Yves Saint Laurent; today Sting, Calvin Klein and Isabelle Adjani belong to it. Vervoordts new book shows living places, in the design of which he had one thing in mind: a harmony between west and east, between old and new. Since the 1970s, Vervoordt has traveled to Asia again and again and has been inspired by Buddhist art and architecture. Together with Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki, he designed the living spaces shown. The two designers have christened their concept "Wabi". The Japanese term refers to things that are in a very simple, natural state. From Zen Buddhism comes the philosophical-aesthetic concept related to it. The most important thing for Vervoordt is the effect that the purity and simplicity of a well-designed interior space have on the psychological well-being of its inhabitants. A space where nothing distracts from the essential, in which it is possible to find inner peace. In his introduction, Vervoordt explains his approach, and for each design example there is a short text that summarizes the spirit of the place and the design ideas into words.
