David Van Roon works south of Rhode Island on the map of an island when he witnesses a misfortune: the Princess Augusta suffers shipwreck off the coast Christmas 1738. Though Van Roon is one of the few to brief row out to help, nightmares and remorse after returning to the mainland plague him. His memory of the disaster remains strangely sketchy. When rumors circulate about a ghost ship appearing off the island a year later, he feels forced to get to the bottom of the matter. The survivor Long Kate tells him of the months-long crossing, of the sufferings of the passengers, the crimes of the crew and of a mischief that began in the Old World. But it is only when Van Roon himself sees the burning ship off Block Island that he realizes the extent of his own guilt. Alexander Pechmann's historically fantastic novel is based on the numerous stories and ballads around the ghost ship The Palatine Light, as well as on the island chronicle of Block Island and the historical ride of Princess Augusta.
