Synopsis

With an afterword by Stefan Rohlfs Similar to the 1912 novel Atlantis, Gerhart Hauptmann depicts in his island novel published in 1924 a self-contained society doomed to exist for a certain period of time isolated from the rest of world events. After a ship accident in which all men have gone down, the rescued women and children land on an uninhabited South Sea island. The women must organize their lives and build a community with administration and a set of rules for living together. As some of the women become pregnant, a religion of immaculate conception is established. The pregnancies are now attributed to the deity Mukalinda. So the women postulate a manless society, carried by a culture determined by mother-law. All male newborns are banished to a remote place on the island... Gerhart Hauptmann caricatured the exaggerated women's emancipation from his point of view with this novel. Started in 1916, he opposed the battles of the World War the image of life-sustaining motherly power. The demise follows the creation of a new culture. In this respect, the at first glance utopian novel material takes up questions of time. The second volume of the Erkneraner edition of Gerhart Hauptmann's works contains for the first time the watercolor cycle created by artist Charlotte E. Pauly (1886-1981), inspired by the novel.
