In fair condition. Boards are typically worn with light scuffing along edges, minor surface scratching to boards. Gilt finishing on spine remains bright and intact. Wax seal on front pate down with offsetting from a now missing piece of paper that accompanied it. Fold out frontis is in good working order. Front gutter is tender. Binding overall is shaken, but intact. Front fly leaf has previous owner s inscription Geo. W. South Berwyn, PA dated 1886. Text block is evenly toned, free of marginalia. Page ten has offsetting from a 20th-century era newspaper insert that discusses John Cadwalader (1794-1801) who is mentioned. Please see photos. A scarce text on burial plots of individuals and families of the St. Church Yard in Philadelphia. St. Peter s Church Yard is a colonial era grave yard with earliest burials dated to 1760. Many notable Philadelphians are buried in the tranquil churchyard: Col. John Nixon, who gave the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776 Revolutionary War hero Commodore John Hazelwood (1726 1800) Painter Charles Willson Peale (1741 1827), who painted the first portrait of George Washington Vice President George Mifflin Dallas (1792 1864), for whom Dallas, Texas, was probably named Commodore Stephen Decatur (1779-1820), hero of the Battle of Tripoli Seven Indian chiefs who died of smallpox on a visit to Philadelphia in 1793 We are unable to find any other examples of this book for sale.
