Why do so many promising ideas fail before they ever create real business growth? Why do teams invest time, money, and talent into innovation programs that never reach the customer, never scale, or never deliver the impact leaders expected?
The Innovation Puzzle is a practical innovation book for leaders, founders, product teams, students, and business professionals who want to understand how successful innovation actually happens inside real organizations. Written by Robert Van Pappelendam and Alan Maingot, with a business school perspective from RSM Erasmus University, this guide breaks innovation down into clear, workable pieces.
This is not theory for theory’s sake. It is a hands-on guide to business development, enterprise innovation strategy, product development, commercialization, customer understanding, team alignment, and the innovator’s mindset needed to turn ideas into value.
Through real-world examples, field-tested insights, and practical frameworks, the authors show why innovation is not only about creating a better product. It is about solving meaningful customer problems, defining the right job-to-be-done, building technical requirements, testing with discipline, designing for adoption, and supporting launch with the right business growth strategy.
Inside, readers will learn how to:
- Understand why innovation fails so often and how to avoid common traps.
- Build an innovation strategy that connects directly to mission, customers, and growth.
- Use customer insight to solve real-world problems instead of chasing ideas.
- Improve workplace innovation by aligning leadership, teams, talent, and culture.
- Strengthen product management and product development management with clearer validation and commercialization steps.
- Think beyond product development and explore innovation in business models, processes, packaging, customer experience, and go-to-market strategy.
Innovation does not have to remain mysterious. With the right pieces in place, it becomes a system you can understand, practice, and improve.
