Full information where further reading and visiting is available. ## ## Inn Signs. In almost every village, there is an inn. Walk along the High Street of any town, and you will likely find half a dozen or more public houses, each distinguished by a large colourful sign hanging outside. Still, more pubs will be found in the back streets, amongst the factories or by the railway station and wayside inns, remote from any village, along the old turnpikes and coach roads. Indeed, the public house is such a familiar aspect of life in Britain that few people give a second thought to the name and sign of their local. Why should it be the Rose and Crown, the Royal Oak, the Dog and Duck, or the Marquis of Granby? And why are there so many Red Lions and White Harts? This book clears away much of the mystery behind inn signs. It explains how in medieval days, when literacy was a rare accomplishment, an innkeeper would erect a large pictorial sign outside his premises to advertise his business and to distinguish it from others. The nature of the sign chosen tended to reflect the ownership of the land on which the inn stood. The Church owned many and so had religious signs such as the Angel; others stood on royal land and so might be the Crown or the King's Head; yet others might adopt a feature from the arms of the local lord of the manor, such as the Swan, a badge of the Dukes of Buckingham. In later times, there were different reasons for the choice of sign. Many of these sources are far from obvious today, and the reader will find in this book explanations of most of the common ones and many rare, unusual signs described and illustrated.## ## Shire Books by Bloomsbury Publishing, a book publishing company based in London, England, and formerly by Shire Publications Ltd. and Osprey Publishing.
