Print on Demand. This book explores the characteristics, behavior, and explosibility of coal-mine dusts. It presents the results of an extensive study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, involving the collection and analysis of dust samples from 100 representative mines across eight districts in Illinois. The book begins by describing the methods used for collecting and analyzing the dust samples, including sieve analysis, proximate and ultimate analyses, and calorific value determinations. It then presents detailed results of the laboratory experiments conducted to assess the flammability of the dust samples, using an apparatus designed by a Bureau of Mines chemist specifically for testing the flammability of coal dust. The book also examines the relationship between the chemical composition and physical properties of the dust samples and their flammability. The author discusses the influence of factors such as particle size, moisture content, and ash content on the explosibility of coal-mine dusts. The book concludes by discussing the implications of the research findings for the prevention of coal-mine explosions. It provides recommendations for controlling dust levels in mines and for mitigating the risks associated with coal-mine dust explosions. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
