This indispensable resource explores the diagnosis and treatment of canine and feline infectious diseases. Disease coverage includes those caused by viruses, rickettsiae, chlamydias, mycoplasmas, bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, and unknown agents. Each disease is accompanied by discussions of diagnostic testing, indications and methods for sample collection and laboratory submission, interpretation of results, and performance of in-office diagnostic procedures. The book includes indications and pharmacologic considerations of antimicrobials used to treat various infections, with coverage of the clinical problems related to infectious diseases, such as environmental control of infections, immunodeficiency disorders, prevention of infection in communal environments, immunocompromised people and pets, and immunization. Also features a complete antimicrobial drug formulary, drug dosage tables, prescribing information, immunization recommendations, and a list of product manufacturers.
Review: This book is a comprehensive, up-to-date reference on canine and feline infectious diseases, with detailed descriptions of their aetiology, epidemiology, clinical picture, diagnosis, treatment, prevention and, where appropriate, public health implications. Every chapter is illustrated with many useful tables, diagrams, algorithms and pictures of clinical cases and histological samples etc, and the legends are concise and highly descriptive. The book comprises 100 chapters, written by more than 100 veterinary specialist authors. The chapters are allocated to five sections, which are followed by nine appendices. The first four sections cover in-depth descriptions of diseases, and section five a more problem-orientated approach is used. This is particularly helpful for the clinician when establishing a list of differential diagnoses during clinical problem solving. The first chapter of each section is a review of diagnostic techniques available for the types of micro-organisms covered in that section. These chapters are intended to provide additional general information for the clinician on choosing the most appropriate diagnostic test and sample material, and to aid with interpretation of test results. The appendices have been updated extensively and complement the rest of the book, while adding significantly to its usefulness in a small animal practice. Cross references are given frequently throughout the book. This is a comprehensive, well-illustrated, detailed reference that enables the reader to familiarise themselves with a topic in-depth. It provides a good resource of clinically-relevant information; a must-have for the bookshelf of every small animal practitioner and specialist alike.
