ISBN:0-380-71437-X2. 196 pages; 4 p. index; illustrated with maps and from contemporary photos; From the introduction: "Pettit's goal was to write home to his family on a roughly once a week basis. He adhered to this plan when possibllle, but when in active field campaigning such as during the Jackson, Mississippi campaign, and the Virginia battles of May and June, 1864, it was impossible to write home. With these few exceptions, however, Pettit's letters generally flowed weekly through the mails to his family for two years until his death in front of Petersburg on July 9, 1864." "Through his keenly observant eyes we get a close-up view of the Civil War from the fighting man's unique perspective."- from the rear cover ad.
