Synopsis: This text celebrates the cultural legacy of India's three Jewish communities: the Bene Israel of Maharashtra, who have lived on the Konkan coast since 175BCE; the Cochin Jews, who may have arrived on the Malabar coast with Thomas the Apostle in the first century BCE; and the Baghdadi Jews, who migrated to Bombay and Calcutta from the 18th century. Each of these groups has developed its own rituals and customs rooted in Judaism, yet influenced by Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. The literature on India Jews, though considerable, has so far concentrated on their history and anthropology. This volume, in exploring their heritage and examining their contribution to India, aims to fill an important gap. THe writers, most of them India Jews, have researched different aspects of this subject over many years, and their articles present new material and insights.
