Item description from seller

A smart third edition of this detailed historical work on the administration of India. Third edition, revised and enlarged. With a folding map frontispiece. A detailed historical study on the administration of India as part of the British Empire, with chapters on the geography of the country, the Himalayas, the constitution and government, civil services, laws and justice, finances, taxation, foreign trade, education, races and languages, the army, and more. Written by Sir John Strachey, a British civil servant and writer in India who served as Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces and briefly acting Governor-General. In the original full burgundy cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers. Bookseller's label to the front pastedown. Very Good.
