Since its founding, the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) has been a staunch advocate with an energetic voice for independent education in the Empire State. Established in 1947 by eleven New York independent school leaders determined to protect their schools from intrusive state regulations, NYSAIS has since grown in both size and scope. Today, NYSAIS represents close to 200 nursery, elementary, and secondary schools serving some 79,000 students throughout the state, making it one of the largest nonprofit independent school organizations in the country. With an eye on independent schools’ “freedom of choice and action,” NYSAIS’s services are now rooted in evaluation and accreditation of member schools; ambitious professional development programs; legal and institutional counsel; and guidance on regulations, statistics, educational developments, and administrative practices. In this history of NYSAIS’s first six decades, Dane L. Peters—a longtime NYSAIS volunteer and board member and the retired head of school of Brooklyn Heights Montessori School—examines the growth and development of an organization committed to preserving the highest ideals of education, putting them into practice, and making a daily difference in the lives of its students.
