You do not need a better script. You need a steadier presence.
The Implied Task: A Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Field Manual for Psychodynamic Formation is a practical, consent-based guide for chaplain interns and residents who feel the daily pressure to fix, preach, or perform.
Built for the realities of CPE—limited time, high emotion, complex systems, and high-stakes encounters—this field manual gives you a repeatable formation rhythm you can use on the floor and in supervision:
- Concept
- CPE-style verbatim
- Implied task identified
- Psychodynamic lens
- Chaplain moves
- Reflection questions
- Practice drills
Inside you will learn how to:
- Contain anxiety in the room—yours, theirs, ours—without exporting it into fixing
- Work with transference (who you are to them right now) and countertransference (what gets stirred in you)
- Honor defenses as protection rather than disrespect
- Respond to shame, grief, anger, and moral pain without bypass or cheap spiritual verdicts
- Build integrity-based next steps in ICU/trauma/end-of-life and military/moral injury context
If you want to become the kind of chaplain who can stay present, protect dignity, and practice spiritual care with clinical clarity—this manual is for you.
