A centerpiece of the exhibition, given its own essay here, was the first North American showing of the Imperial Portraits of Pantelleria: three marble heads (Julius Caesar, the emperor Titus, and Antonia Minor) recovered in 2003 from cisterns on the acropolis of the Sicilian island of Pantelleria. The Caesar head corresponds closely to his coin portraits of 44 BC and is counted among the most faithful surviving likenesses of him. Color photographs throughout document Roman sculpture, portrait busts, coins, cameos, engraved gems, funerary marbles, and household objects, arranged by theme.Contents: Introduction (Giuseppina Carlotta Cianferoni); Imperial Rome (Domizia Tami); Architecture and the City in the Roman Empire (Eugenio Martera); The Imperial Portraits of Pantelleria (Caterina Greco, Antonella Testa); The Emperors; Gods, Religions and Cults; Private Life; The Roman Household; Public Life; Pax Romana; Legacy.…
