This book is based on the 18 tutorials presented during the 31st workshop on Advances in Analog Circuit Design held in Villach, Austria. In it, expert designers share their insights on a variety of topics at the frontier of analog circuit design, with specific contributions focusing on the design of imaging sensors, power management circuits, PLLs and frequency synthesizers. As such, for anyone involved in analog circuit research and development, this book provides a valuable overview of the state-of-the-art.
Kofi Makinwa holds degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife, Nigeria (B.Sc. (1st class hons.), M.Sc.), and from the Philips International Institute, Eindhoven (M.E.E. (cum laude)) and Delft University of Technology, Delft (Ph.D.), both in the Netherlands. From 1989 to 1999, he was a Research Scientist with Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven. Since 1999, he has been at Delft University of Technology, where he is an Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Professor and the Head of the Microelectronics Department. His research interests include the design of mixed-signal circuits, sensor interfaces and smart sensors. This has led to 20+ books, 350+ technical papers, and 30+ patents.
Dr. Makinwa was the Analog Subcom chair (2018-2021) of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), and has served on the technical program committees of several other IEEE conferences including IEEE Sensors, Transducers and the VLSI Symposium. He was a member of the editorial board of the Proceedings of the IEEE. He has been a two-term distinguished lecturer of the Solid-State Circuits Society and a two-term elected member of its Adcom. He is currently a member of the executive committee of the VLSI symposium and a co-chair of several editions of the Advances in Analog Circuit Design (AACD) workshop and the IEEE Sensor Interfaces Meeting (SIM). Dr. Makinwa is the co-recipient of 18 best paper awards, from the JSSC, ISSCC and the VLSI symposium among others. In 2023, at the 70th anniversary of ISSCC, he was recognized as being its all-time top contributor. He is a fellow of the IEEE and a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
Andrea Baschirotto graduated in Electronic Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Pavia in 1989. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the same university in 1994, and then became a Researcher (Assistant Professor). In 1998, he joined the Department of Innovation Engineering, University of Lecce, Italy, as an Associate Professor. He then joined the Department of Physics, University of Milan-Bicocca, Italy, in 2007 as an Associate Professor, where he is currently a Full Professor (2021) and the director of the Microelectronics Group. His main research interests are in the design of mixed-signal circuits for low-power and/or high-speed signal processing. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 papers in international journals and conferences, and he holds nearly 60 US patents. In addition, he has co-authored more than 120 papers originating from research collaborations on high-energy physics.
Dr. Baschirotto has served as an Associate Editor of both the Trans. Circuits and Systems I and II, and he has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Solid-state Circuits (JSSC) since 2014. In 2002, he chaired the Technical Program Committee of the European Solid-State Circuit Conference (ESSCIRC). He was the JSSC Guest Editor for ESSCIRC 2003 and ESSCIRC 2007. He has been the general chair of IEEE-PRIME (2006, 2013) and of AACD (2008, 2013, 2016, 2019). He served for several years on the ESSCIRC TPC as the Data Converter Subcommittee Chairman and he was the General Chairman of ESSDERC/ESSCIRC 2022. He was the secretary of the European Committee of ISSCC. He has served on the technical program committees of several other international conferences including DATE and ASSCC. He is the founder and the Chairman of the IEEE Solid-State Circuit Society Italian Chapter, which received the 2020 Best SSCS Chapter Award. He is an IEEE Fellow (2013).
Bram Nauta received the M.Sc (cum laude) and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands in 1987 and 1991, respectively. In 1991 he joined Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven the Netherlands. He returned to the University of Twente in 1998, where he is currently a distinguished professor and head of the IC Design group. From 2016 to 2020, he was the chair of the Electrical Engineering department. His research interests are in high-speed analog CMOS circuits, software-defined radio, cognitive radio and beamforming.
Dr. Nauta was the Editor-in-Chief (2007-2010) of the Journal of Solid-State Circuits (JSSC), and the 2013 program chair of the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). He was also the President of the Solid-State Circuits Society (2018-2019). He has been an Associate Editor of the Trans. on Circuits and Systems II (1997-1999), and of the JSSC (2001-2006). He was on the Technical Program Committee of the VLSI Symposium (2009-2013) and served on the steering committee and program committee (1999-2017) of the European Solid-State Circuit Conference (ESSCIRC). He also served on the program committee (2003-2013) and the Executive committee (2007-2015, 2022-today) of the ISSCC. He is a co-recipient of the 2002 and 2009 ISSCC Best European Paper award, and in 2023, he was recognized as a top 10 contributor. He served two terms as a distinguished lecturer of the Solid-State Circuits Society.
